  1. James Saxon says:

Is there a cucumber named toroise?

    1. Sarah Bond says:

      I haven’t heard of one!

  2. Richard J. Smith Sr. says:

love your website , found your article “57 types of cucumbers” , what I am looking for is to identify a cucumber that keeps volunteering in my yard ,,, the closest your article comes is the mouse melon – the size of a grape, turns yellow when ripe – the volunteer cucumber I found is the size of a pea and when ripe turns dark green to black – these taste like a regular cucumber – it will climb on a 6 foot chicken wire trellis for ease of harvest

    1. Sarah Bond says:

Hi Richard! Your cucumber could be a micro-cucumber, known for its tiny size and potentially dark color when ripe. Wild cucumbers, which can also be small and have unusual colors, might fit your description as well. Asking local gardening experts could help identify it.

  3. Ian Miller says:

I have a cucumber that is short and fat ,yellowish on the bottom half and green on top, about 5 inches long and fat. If I send you a picture can you identify it?

    1. Sarah Bond says:

Based on your description, your cucumber might be an overripe pickling cucumber or Persian cucumber. The yellowing suggests it’s past its prime for fresh eating, which is common for pickling varieties ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Donna says:

I have a cucumber that is football shaped with ridges and is fuzzy…not as large as a foot ball of course… planted seeds from a cucamelon package and this is what grew ??? It is quite heavy and fleshy…seeds are yellowish inside

    1. Sarah Bond says:

It sounds like you might have grown a different type of cucurbit, such as a gourd or squash, rather than a true cucamelon, which is usually small and round. The fuzzy, ridged, and football-shaped fruit you described is more characteristic of some squashes or ornamental gourds.

  5. MJ Gray says:

My cucumber looks like a mini watermelon when young, ripens to a soft yellow at about 2 1/2 inched long and not much less wide. When cut, the seeds are in a trefoil.
I had seen these growing wild in two areas near to my home near Galveston Tx. The second time I saw them I took a few home and they were very happy long vines and extremely fruitful pretty much taking over that part of the yard. Hours spent searching the internet have only resulted in the same question from others, but no definitive answers as to edibility.
Hope you can help me to learn, eat and still live.
    Thanks

    1. Sarah Bond says:

Sounds like youโ€™ve got a mystery melon on your hands! From your descriptionโ€”mini watermelon look, soft yellow when ripe, trefoil seed patternโ€”it might be a type of wild gherkin or native melon, possibly Melothria pendula (creeping cucumber), which grows wild in Texas. That one turns dark when ripe and is not recommended to eat when fully mature, but edible when green.

That said, some wild cucurbits can be toxic when ripe, so unless you can positively ID it, Iโ€™d play it safe and not eat it just yet.

  6. Sherry G Risley says:

What kind of cucumber is round or sometimes oblong; white to yellow and orange skin? I have a ton of them growing in my garden area and do not know what to do with them. Are they edible? They smell like a normal cucumbet when you cut them.

    1. Sarah Bond says:

It sounds like youโ€™ve got lemon cucumbers (despite the name, they donโ€™t taste like lemons) or a similar heirloom variety that turns from pale yellow to deeper orange as they over-ripen.

Theyโ€™re totally edibleโ€”crisp, mild, and great for salads, pickling, or just slicing and snacking. If theyโ€™ve gone deep orange, they might be a little tougher and more seedy, so peel them and scoop the seeds if needed.

  7. Maria says:

I recently received a free cucumber, but not sure what it is. It is long according to the picture you showed it is a Armanain. How do l know for sure? How do l use it.?

    1. Sarah Bond says:

Armenian cucumbers are long, pale green, and ridged with thin edible skin and a mild, slightly sweet flavor, so if yours matches that description you can treat it just like any other cucumberโ€”slice it raw for salads, toss it in sandwiches, or even pickle it.
