Goat cheese, with its creamy texture and distinctive tang, has found its way into many kitchens around the world.
But what do you do when you find yourself with more of this delightful cheese than you can use right away? Can you freeze goat cheese?
The answer is a resounding yes! Freezing goat cheese is not only possible but can also be a game-changer for your kitchen routine. Let’s dive into the ins and outs of freezing goat cheese and how to do it right.
What is Goat Cheese?
Goat cheese, often referred to as chevre, is a cheese made from the milk of goats. It’s known for its earthy, slightly tart flavor and its creamy, spreadable texture. This cheese has made its mark in both savory and sweet dishes across various cuisines.
One of the reasons goat cheese is beloved by many is its versatility. From adding a creamy richness to salads to being the star of a cheeseboard, it’s a kitchen MVP.
Firm vs soft goat cheese
You can find goat cheese either firm or soft. The firm varieties are often sold in a block form and have a drier texture. Soft goat cheeses are often in log form and are ore moist.
While this guide to freezing goat cheese works for either variety, soft goat cheese spoils much more quickly (thanks to the high moisture content), so I typically find myself needing to freeze it more often.
Why Freeze Goat Cheese?
There are a number of reasons why I regularly freeze my goat cheese.
Buying in Bulk
Purchasing goat cheese in larger quantities can be a savvy move. It’s often more cost-effective, and it means fewer trips to the store.
Preserving Seasonal Varieties
Specialty or seasonal goat cheeses can be a real treat. Freezing allows you to enjoy them long after their limited availability.
Extending Shelf Life
Nobody likes to waste food. Freezing can significantly extend the life of your goat cheese, reducing food waste and saving you money.
Does freezing goat cheese change the texture?
Surprisingly, the texture of goat cheese isn’t change much when you freeze then thaw it! When frozen in a freezer-safe, airtight bag or container, goat cheese retains it’s velvety texture and sharp flavor.

- Wrap: Wrap each portion tightly in plastic wrap.
- Freeze: Place wrapped pieces into an airtight bag or container. Write a label with the date on your container. Freeze for up to 3 months.
