Whether or not your fall plans include apple picking or oven-baked apple chips is a must-try. They couldn’t be simpler to make!

When cooked in the oven, these crispy baked apple slices cook for about an hour and a half. While they cool, they get even crispier, which gives them a true chip texture without any frying or oil!

One simple ingredient

Any apple that is crispy will work to make chips, but I prefer to use Honeycrisp, Fuji, and Pink Lady. These are all sweet yet a little tangy. Try to avoid mealy apples because they are too soft to hold up to the long bake time. If you need more apple ideas, learn about different types of apples here.

Let’s make apple chips!

Step 1: Prep the Apples
Slice the apples horizontally. They need to be as thin as possible, which is easiest to do if using a mandolin slicer.

Step 2: Bake the Slices
Arrange the slices in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Place it in the oven and set the temperature as low as your oven will go (I did 200°F, 93°C). Bake for 45 minutes, flip all the chips, and continue baking for another 45 minutes or until crispy.

Step 3: Let Them Cool
Transfer the chips to a wire rack and let them cool completely (they’ll become crispier as they cool).

Step 4: Garnish and Serve
Serve once cooled, optionally sprinkling with ground cinnamon.

Air fryer apple chips

Itching to break out your air fryer? This is the perfect recipe for it! Air frying is an easy alternate method for turning your favorite apple variety into crispy chips.

  1. Make One Layer: Arrange the apple slices in an even layer in the fryer.
  2. Weigh Them Down: Place a metal rack on top of the slices to prevent them from flying around.
  3. Air Fry: Air fry at 300ºF (148ºC) for 15 minutes, flipping at least once throughout cooking.

Notes

Store apple chips in an airtight container for 3 to 5 days. To prevent them from losing their crispiness, place a paper towel in the container to help absorb excess moisture.
To make in the air fryer, arrange apple slices in an even layer in your air fryer, placing a metal rack on top of them to prevent them from flying around. Air fry at 300°F (148°C) for 15 minutes, flipping at least once throughout cooking.
