With dozens of rave reviews, you can be sure that this strawberry cottage cheese smoothie packs in as much flavor as it does protein. With just five ingredients and no protein powder, it’s a quick and easy option that tastes like a strawberry milkshake!

After creating hundreds of healthy smoothie recipes over the years, I’ve learned a few tricks to making epic smoothies (like adding spinach to your smoothie for vitamins without a weird flavor, or adding coffee and oats to a smoothie for a full-course breakfast in a glass).
Recently, one of my favorite tricks has been adding cottage cheese to smoothies, which makes them creamy and high in protein!

“Rich, creamy and filling. I used frozen strawberries and and added a little more honey to sweeten but the recipe is delicious and I will be using this with other frozen fruits in my rotation of smoothies. Thank you so much.” —Shannon

you just need five ingredients
The addition of cottage cheese creates a great creamy consistency that seriously makes the smoothie taste like a strawberry milkshake! Jump to the recipe card for full printable instructions.
- Milk: You can use your favorite kind: almond, cashew, cow’s, whatever!
- Cottage Cheese: Using cottage cheese creates a thicker smoothie while also adding a boost of protein (which helps you stay full for a longer period of time).
- Frozen Strawberries: I like to use frozen strawberries because they help keep the smoothie nice and icy. If you want to use fresh, feel free!
- Honey and Vanilla: If desired, add more honey and vanilla, or substitute another sweetener, like maple or Stevia, for the honey.
frozen fruit tip
I always keep my freezer stocked with frozen fruit so that I can whip up a smoothie whenever I’m in the mood. Since I often overestimate the amount of fresh fruit I can eat in a week, using frozen fruit helps me save money and prevent waste.

Sarah’s Tip
Add the milk to the blender first. The liquid helps lighten the load on your blender to get that ultra-creamy texture.
Smoothie Variations
The best part about this smoothie is that it’s easily customizable and can be switched up to fit your mood.
- Different Fruit: You can pretty much use any type of fruit in this recipe! Add blueberries and raspberries for a berry medley, go the tropical route with pineapple or mangoes, or add some banana for extra sweetness.
- Use Yogurt: Cottage cheese provides some awesome health benefits (think blood sugar levels, heart health, digestion, etc.), which is why I love to sneak it into my smoothies! However, you can also use Greek yogurt if that’s more your style.
- Go Vegan: You can also swap the cottage cheese with a high protein vegan yogurt and use plant-based milk.
- Add More Protein: Boost the protein even more by adding chia or flax seeds or by adding a high protein vegetable like spinach, kale, or cauliflower. (Or make a high-protein smoothie with protein powder!)

Just made with frozen pineapple for myself & my 5 yr old. Definitely kid approved!
Delish recipe! Can’t wait to make it again for breakfast tomorrow!
Rich, creamy and filling. I used frozen strawberries and and added a little more honey to sweeten but the recipe is delicious and I will be using this with other frozen fruits in my rotation of smoothies. Thank you so much.
The tasteful smoothie is nice and thick but I didn’t have any honey so I used great value brand Stevia, about 8 packets she another splash of vanilla with a few more strawberries for extra flavor 😍 great recipe!
Just made this smoothie this morning, oh my word! So delicious and simple! Thank you!
So happy to hear it, Rachel! 😀
YES, it’s a keeper!
Quite surprised how nice it tasted although I used pineapple instead of strawberries
So good! Creamy goodness. I threw in a handful of fresh spinach and a tsp of matcha powder. Will make again!
So good!! I made it as a meal replacement shake and drank the whole recipe – great size! Definitely just a snack if you split it into 2 servings.
Really great texture. Enjoyed the taste. I did add honey but may try maple syrup next time. I substituted strawberries for blueberries. Delish.
