Hi, I’m Sarah! I’m the founder of Live Eat Learn, chief recipe developer, cookbook author, and a proud nutrition + food science nerd.

I’ve got a B.S. in Human Nutrition and an M.S. in Sensory Science, which is basically the study of how we experience food through the five senses (and yes, it’s as fun as it sounds). Put simply, I just love food.

From Nutrition to the Kitchen

When I graduated from Penn State with a nutrition degree, I realized something terrifying: I could explain what folate does in the body… but I didn’t know how to roast a dang vegetable.

So I started this blog in 2015 to teach myself, and eventually the world, how to actually cook vegetarian food that’s healthy, exciting, and most importantly, doable.

While earning my Master’s in Sensory Science (a type food science that I studied at Wageningen University in the Netherlands), I dove deep into what makes food taste good. Now, I bring that knowledge to every recipe you see on Live Eat Learn.

What Is Sensory Science?

Sensory science is the art and science of understanding how we experience the world through our senses–taste, smell, sight, touch, and hearing. It’s what helps us figure out why one chocolate bar is “OMG amazing” while another is just “meh,” or why the sound of sizzling onions makes you instantly hungry. Essentially, it’s about decoding the delicious mysteries of why we like what we like, and making food even better because of it!

In 2024, I released my self-published debut vegetarian cookbook, EAT! I wrote and designed the entire thing, and we fulfill all orders from our home in Denver.

Recipe Inspiration

The recipes I develop on Live Eat Learn draw inspiration from:

  • My childhood, growing up in a family that prioritized homecooked meals and lots of veggies!
  • My travels, which have introduced me to boundless new flavors and ideas. I’ve visited 40 countries and am always out exploring in the name of food!
  • My education in human nutrition and food science.
  • You! My goal with Live Eat Learn is to create recipes that help you eat more veggies and stop missing meat on your plate. And with over 1,000 recipes on the site, we’re not slowing down!

“I love your recipes and always turn to them when I’m looking for something that’s comforting, easy to make, and vegetarian (because while I’m not strictly vegetarian, I get the meat-ick a lot, haha.) Thanks so much!” – Jae

When I’m not making or thinking about food, I’m probably out in the foothills of Denver, skiing or hiking with my pup, Rhubarb.
