We love smoothies around here. They’re an amazing way to get a huge dose of fruits and veggies before 9 a.m., setting a healthy tone for the rest of the day.

While there’s a time and place for a green smoothie bursting with vegetables, sometimes it’s nice to blend up a simple smoothie that focuses on traditional, ultra-tasty flavors.

You know what I’m talking about: Strawberry Banana, the O.G. smoothie flavor. The perfect blend of fruity berry and creamy banana. Sweet without the sugar, creamy without the yogurt. It’s simple, pure, and so delicious.

You’ll need three ingredients

This is just an overview – jump to the recipe card for all measurements and instructions!

  • Strawberries: Fresh of frozen work here. You can also substitute blueberries or blackberries!
  • Banana: Use fresh or frozen. I like to pre-chop and freeze soon-to-go-bad bananas and store them in my freezer for smoothies. It ensures I never throw away rotten bananas.
  • Milk: You can use cow’s or dairy-free milk (like almond milk). Alternatively, you can make this smoothie without milk and use apple or orange juice instead.

Sarah’s Smoothie Tip

To make your smoothie thick, make sure at least one of your fruits is frozen! While ice is nice in adding instant chill and bulk to smoothies, I’ve found that it makes them too watery (not to mention can be hard to blend smoothly). Instead, I like to freeze fruit and throw that into the smoothie to make it thicker and more frosty.

Change It Up

  • Don’t Like Banana? The banana can be replaced with 1/4 cup of yogurt (vanilla is delicious in this smoothie!). Or omit it altogether and make this healthy strawberry smoothie.
  • Make Popsicles: In the mood for an icy treat? Add a touch of honey then freeze the mixture into homemade popsicles!
  • Add Protein: You can add a boost of protein by adding Greek yogurt, protein powder, or even cottage cheese.
  • Boost The Nutrition: Add a spoonful of chia or flax seeds for some omega-3 fatty acids, or sneak in veggies with a handful of kale or spinach (while the kale and spinach don’t impact the taste, they will make the smoothie brown-ish). For a truly hidden veggie, add cauliflower to your smoothie!
  • Meal Prep Them: You can turn this recipe into smoothie cubes for a meal prep option!

This is the best smoothie I have ever tasted. It is super thick and has an amazing flavor and texture. After I blended it together, I poured it into a bowl and popped it in the freezer for 5 minutes. It made the smoothie even thicker so I ate it as a smoothie bowl with toppings like fresh berries, banana, and granola. I would also recommend using frozen strawberries and bananas, as it makes this smoothie so tasty and thick. I would for sure give this recipe 5 stars, and it is now my favorite breakfast every morning!

    I used frozen berries, delicious

  7. Andrew says:

Without the banana, it was tasteless. (Milk, fresh frozen strawberries, a dash of maple syrup.) With the banana, it tasted only like banana.

I cannot get a strawberry smoothie to have ANY strawberry taste. Any thoughts? Thanks!

(Today I used some crushed ice, 1 1/2 c milk, 5 jumbo fresh frozen strawberries, one-half fresh frozen banana, a small handful of baby spinach, a little cinnamon, and a TBSP of maple syrup. No strawberry taste at all. Only banana. And I know the strawberries have taste, because I also eat them fresh from the same batch.

    1. Sarah Bond says:

Hi Andrew! More sugar or sweetener will help to bring out those strawberry flavors. That and complementary flavors, like vanilla (this strawberry smoothie recipe has both). Happy blending! 😀

I made my first smoothie today. My husband and I both loved it. I used banana, frozen strawberries and canned coconut milk with a tsp of sugar. It was quite thick and very delicious! Couldn’t have been easier. It’s simplicity got this old girl (79yo) to try something I always thought was for the younger crowd. Tomorrow we’re going to try it with frozen blueberries. Thank you for this simple, delicious recipe.
