A smoothie is always a great option when you’re running out the door and only have 5 minutes for breakfast. They’re quick to make and can easily be customized to be vegan, to add protein…whatever you want!

This berry cabbage smoothie is the perfect low-carb option for a hectic morning. The cabbage gives it a fluffy, almost milkshake-like texture. You can add protein powder or Greek yogurt for a bit more oomph or add flaxseeds for fiber. No matter how you enjoy it, one sip and you’ll be making it daily.

“Really good! I used my zip fizz black cherry drink with fewer carbs than OJ. I grated and froze my cabbage and blueberries! I put protein powder in and it is delicious!” —Charlene

The ingredients are simple

Don’t worry, the berries and OJ balance the cabbage flavor, so the smoothie tastes sweet and fruity! (Jump to the recipe card for measurements.)

  • Red Cabbage: This thickens up the smoothie while also adding Vitamin C, zinc, copper, phosphorus, and magnesium! Green cabbage works, too, but it is not as nutrient-dense and won’t result in the same bright color.
  • Mixed Berries: By including berries, we get not only a delicious flavor but also antioxidants, blood sugar support, anti-inflammatory benefits, and loads of fiber!
  • Orange Juice and Cinnamon: These both add flavor, and the orange juice helps to bring together the other ingredients and add sweetness.

Make It Frosty

We prefer using frozen fruit for smoothies because it creates a thick smoothie without requiring any ice (which tends to water down your smoothie and can be hard on your blender).

It’s too easy

  1. Blend everything together: Blend until it’s all smooth and mixed together, and then enjoy!

Reader Tip

Some readers have had success with grating and then freezing the cabbage. This makes an even creamier smoothie! You could also do this instead of using frozen berries to avoid using ice.

Save it for later

I prefer to freeze my smoothie in silicon molds or an ice cube tray. Once frozen, I transfer it to a plastic bag or airtight container to stay in the freezer. When I want the smoothie, I just have to toss a few cubes in the blender with a splash of liquid.

smoothie variations

As with most fruit smoothies, you can add flavors and ingredients to make this berry smoothie your own!

  • Swap The Fruit: Try something tropical like frozen pineapple and mango and a splash of coconut milk.
  • Add More Nutrients: Things like yogurt, protein powder, chia seeds, or flax seeds all add additional nutrients.

Notes
