Papaya is one of the most underrated fruits in my opinion. It has an ultra-soft, buttery texture with a unique, floral-sweet flavor. It’s incredibly rich in vitamins A and C, folate, and fiber, making it a nutritious addition to any diet.

I love to add it to sweet recipes, like fruit salads and smoothies, but it also makes a delicious addition to savory salads and salsas. Whatever you may need this tropical treat for, knowing how to cut papaya properly is one kitchen skill I recommend mastering!

How to Cut Papaya

Cutting a papaya is simple once you know the basics. Here’s how to cut papaya into cubes and half-moon slices.

Wash & Prep

Wash the papaya under running water. Using a sharp paring or utility knife, cut off both ends to create flat surfaces. Stand the papaya upright on one of the flat ends and slice the skin off from top to bottom. Using a smaller knife will help prevent removing too much skin.

Slice the papaya in half lengthwise to expose the seeds. Using a spoon, scoop out the seeds and the fibrous center from both halves, leaving a clean bowl-shaped interior.

Slices

Place each half flat-side down and slice to your preferred thickness, creating even slices perfect for snacking or adding to fruit platters.

Cubes

Follow the same steps to wash, peel, and halve the papaya, removing the seeds. Cut thick half-moon slices, then cut them crosswise into cubes. Adjust the size according to your recipe or preferences.

Cutting Tips

  • Sharp Knife: Always use a sharp knife for clean cuts and to avoid squishing the fruit.
  • Finger Safety: Tuck your fingers in and keep your cutting board stable on a damp paper towel to avoid mishaps, especially since papaya is a very slippery fruit once peeled.
  • Peeling Technique: Use a vegetable peeler or a small knife to remove the skin. Start from the top and peel downward, rotating the papaya as you go.
  • Stabilize the Fruit: When you’re cutting slices or cubes, place the papaya flat-side down on the cutting board to keep it stable and secure.
  • Chilling: Chill the papaya before cutting if you want firmer pieces. This initial step can make the fruit easier to handle and less slippery.

How to Pick a Papaya

  • Color: Look for a papaya with a golden yellow color, avoiding overly green ones. If you can only see green papayas, let it ripen for a few extra days before cutting it.
  • Firmness: The fruit should feel firm but yield slightly to gentle pressure.
  • Smell: A ripe papaya will have a sweet, fragrant aroma.

Storing Cut Papaya

Cover peeled or halved papaya tightly in plastic wrap, and it will last for a few days in your fridge. To maintain the freshness of your papaya cubes or slices, store them in an airtight container with a damp paper towel in the crisper section of your refrigerator. Properly stored, cut papaya can last between 3-5 days, depending on its initial freshness.

How to Use Papaya

Now that you know how to cut papaya, you need some recipe inspiration for how to use it! Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Cubed for Fruit Salads: Add papaya cubes to fruit salads for a tropical twist. Try it in my curried melon salad.
  • Slices for Snacking: Enjoy papaya slices as a healthy, refreshing snack.
  • Blended in Smoothies: Blend papaya into smoothies for a creamy, sweet base, like in my passion fruit smoothie.
  • Garnish Desserts: Use papaya to garnish desserts, like my watermelon sorbet.
