In today’s edition of “Things you can make in your air fryer”…KALE CHIPS! While I’m a huge fan of oven baked kale chips, making them in the air fryer is not only faster but it saves on electricity.

With almost hundreds of five-star reviews, this tried-and-true kale chips recipe produces perfectly crispy, lightly salted little snacks in 10 minutes flat.

Jump to the recipe card for all measurements!

  • Kale: I tested both curly and lacinato kale and both work well.
  • Oil: Just enough to coat the leaves lightly. To make kale chips with less oil, spray the leaves with cooking spray rather than using the full amount of oil.
  • Salt

Season Them

Add some flavor to your chips before cooking using any of these popcorn seasonings (Ranch and Dorito are my favorites!)

Chips taking flight?

If you notice that your kale chips are flying around in the air fryer, cover them with and air fryer rack. This will keep them in place while allowing air to flow around them. I’ve found this happens in some air fryers and not others!

Instructions

  • Prep: Wash and dry kale. Cut the leaves away from the spine, then roughly tear the leaves into bite-sized pieces. Massage oil into the leaves, making sure each piece of kale has a thin coat of oil. Sprinkle with salt (and optional flavorings) and toss to coat.

  • Transfer: Lay kale in a single layer in your air fryer basket, uncurling the leaves as much as possible while keeping them from overlapping too much (you may need to cook in batches).

  • Cook: Air fry for 4 to 5 minutes at 375°F (190°C), shaking the pan once to help them cook evenly. Keep a close eye on them after 3 minutes. They’re done when crispy!

Notes

Optional flavorings: Sprinkle on after air frying. Find a full list of my favorite seasonings here (our two favorites below!).
Homemade Ranch Seasoning: ½ tsp dried dill, ½ tsp dried chives, ½ tsp garlic powder, ½ tsp onion powder, ¼ tsp salt, ¼ tsp pepper
Homemade Dorito Seasoning: 2 Tbsp nutritional yeast, ¼ tsp garlic powder, ¼ tsp onion powder, ¼ tsp cumin, ¼ tsp paprika, ¼ tsp chili powder, ¼ tsp salt
Store kale chips in a paper bag, or in a loosely sealed plastic bag lined with a paper towel. They keep well at room temperature for up to a week. If they lose their crunch, throw them back in the air fryer for a minute or two.

Dino Kale Chips

This recipe also works well with dinosaur kale, aka lacinato kale. They may need just a minute or two more cooking time because the leaves aren’t as delicate as the curly kale.

Love kale chips?

Try spinach chips! They have a similar taste and texture and simply use a different leafy green.

Perfect timing for crispy kale chips. Sprinkled a bit of Trader Joe’s cheese seasoning on after cooking, so yummy!

Love kale chips and they turned out pretty good but they kept flying around in my air fryer and the ones that got pulled to the top got burnt really bad. Not sure how to keep that from happening.

  2. Sue Hutchson says:

Recipe says use 5 cups of kale. How many servings does this make?

Sorry, but I ended up with blackened kale. I may or may not try again. Maybe my air fryer is hotter than yours. IDK.

    1. Sarah Bond says:

It’s important to keep a close eye on them – they burn quickly!

Just got my first air fryer and tried this. Loved it!! Super easy to do and the kale chips came out perfect. I used sea salt, cracked black pepper, garlic and dill as seasoning. Yum!

This was just too easy, lol! I could do this on a regular basis. I made one batch with just kosher salt and the next one with a 1/4 tsp of Spice Islands garlic and herb seasoning (very tasty). Thank you for this healthier snack option 🙂

This worked exactly as written, thanks! Is nutritional yeast required in doritos seasoning?

    1. Sarah Bond says:

It contributes a lot of cheesy flavor, I wouldn’t skip it! 🙂

We only needed 2 minutes…and turned it down to 185 degrees.

Just what I needed. My neighbor gave me curly kale from his garden and I didn’t know what to do with it (other than chop it and add to salad or a smoothie). I hope they turn out for me and be a new low calorie snack!

    Sooooo, eeeeeeezy!
I’ve just opened my exploration of kale and I’d heard heaps on the chips.
Important to get every millimeter covered in the oil. Get your hands in!
We had some left over so it was ideal to have a crack.
Just followed the simple oil and salt mix. About 4 minutes at 190C and…. Phwoar!

    Sorry I couldn’t leave a pic…they didn’t last long enough!

I really wanted to love these but they were sooooo salty… I would definitely make them again but maybe halve of even quarter the salt!!

    1. The Live Eat Learn Team says:

Thanks for the feedback Natalie, hopefully you’ll enjoy them with less salt 😊
