19 Vegetarian Ways to Use a Cast Iron Skillet

Here are 19 of my favorite vegetarian cast iron skillet recipes, from hearty breakfasts to deliciously caramelized casseroles.

One of my favorite items in my kitchen isn’t a fancy gadget or specialized tool…it’s my cast iron skillet! With a large surface area and thick bottom, the humble cast iron skillet is great for holding and evenly distributing heat. This makes it great for everything from caramelizing to frying to everyday cooking!

It’s also oven-safe, meaning you can move it from stove to oven without having to move the contents to a new pan (perfect for pot pie!). Can you tell I sort of love it? So today I’m sharing a handful of my favorite vegetarian recipes that can be made in a cast iron skillet!

Is it seasoned?

P.S. Do you have a brand new cast iron? Be sure to season it before cooking with it, which will prevent it from rusting and make it non-stick. To season a cast iron skillet:

  1. Scrub your skillet with hot water, then dry well.
  2. Spread a thin layer of vegetable oil over the skillet, rubbing it all over the surface with a paper towel.
  3. Set skillet upside down in the oven at 375°. Place a baking sheet or foil on a rack below to catch drips.
  4. Bake for 1 hour, then let your skillet cool completely in the oven.

After seasoning, don’t wash your cast iron with soap. Hot water should do the trick (especially given that we’re not using meat in any of these recipes). Enjoy!
