When you cook for a living (hi 👋), you get very good at spotting which meal kits are the real deal…and which ones are just expensive chaos wrapped in cardboard.

So when Hungryroot asked me to test another delivery, I was already a few boxes deep into using them on my own. And as a nutritionist and sensory scientist who lives for easy vegetarian dinners, I’m always curious: Is this actually going to make weekday cooking smoother? Or is it another “15-minute recipe” that requires 400 steps and a foot massage?

Spoiler: this box was one of the best I’ve tested yet.

Several colorful plant-based meals are arranged on plates and bowls in front of a large Hungryroot meal delivery box on a wooden surface.

Disclosure

Hungryroot compensated me for this review, but (as always) all opinions are my own. I’ve tested multiple boxes over the past few months, cooked through tons of their recipes, and used the groceries in my own everyday cooking.

What Is Hungryroot?

Think of Hungryroot as the hybrid of grocery delivery and meal kits, without the annoying single-use spice packets or half a tomato destined to die in your fridge. Instead, they send real groceries plus simple, fast recipe ideas built around those ingredients.

For someone who cooks 24/7, I love that I can use their groceries however I want (or follow their recipes exactly). It feels more like stocking your fridge than committing to a rigid meal plan.

A variety of colorful dishes, including salads, pasta, roasted vegetables, and a casserole, are arranged on a wooden board next to a Hungryroot box on a kitchen counter.

What I Tested This Week

Here’s everything included in my latest order (10 meals total / 14 servings).
Subtotal: $141.82 + $17.90 add-ons → $159.72 total

With 14 servings, that shakes out to about:
➡️ $11.40 per serving
➡️ $22.80 per 2-serving meal

(And if you compare that to ordering takeout? A steal.)

Chickpea, Feta + Hummus Veg Bowl

7 minutes • 600 calories • 2 servings

This was the star of the whole box; the kind of bowl I already make in my own kitchen. As a chickpea enthusiast, you know I love a high-protein veg bowl, and the combo of warm chickpeas + crisp cucumbers + feta + creamy hummus? Perfection. Our household favorite!

Lemongrass Tofu + Asparagus Rice Bowl

9 minutes • 570 calories • 2 servings

This one was shockingly easy. The tofu comes pre-braised, so it browns beautifully with almost no effort. Asparagus + shallot sautéed together make the whole thing taste fresh and bright. This is exactly the type of fast dinner I wish people knew vegetarian cooking could be.

Paneer + Cauliflower Tikka Masala Bowl

12 minutes • 530 calories • 2 servings

I always forget about paneer, then I make something like this and immediately think, why am I not cooking with this every week? Incredibly flavorful for how few ingredients you need. One of our top picks.

Creamy Broccoli Cheddar Baked Mac ’n Cheese

24 minutes • 880 calories • 2 servings

Yes, it took the longest…but the longest part was literally the oven. Actual hands-on time? Maybe 10 minutes. This one felt the most “homemade”. Cozy, cheesy, and surprisingly balanced with the broccoli thrown in. Great for Sunday-night comfort!

Marinara Ricotta Ravioli with Baby Mushrooms

15 minutes • 450 calories • 2 servings

We’re not huge pasta people, but even we liked this one. It’s simple (maybe too simple) but in that “I’m starving and need dinner in 15 minutes” way that just works. Next time I might add spinach or chili flakes, but it was still a win.

What I Loved About Hungryroot

1. Fast Meals That Don’t Feel Like “Meal Kits”
Most of these came together in 7–12 minutes. And as someone who’s tested thousands of recipes, I can tell you: that’s actually accurate, not marketing math.

2. The Groceries Are Good
Everything was cold, crisp, and well packed. The veggies were fresh, the tofu and paneer tasted clean, and even the sauces were high-quality (not sugary or gloopy.

3. Real Flexibility
Use the groceries for their recipes or make your own thing. Mix and match ingredients. Add your own seasonings. It’s structured enough for busy weeks, flexible enough for creative ones.

4. No Food Waste
Everything got used. Every single thing.

What Could Be Better

Because I keep it honest (even in sponsored posts):

🔸 Price: It’s not the cheapest grocery option. But compared to takeout (or organic groceries + your time) the cost-per-meal is reasonable.
🔸 Ingredients aren’t grouped by recipe: Not a big deal, but you do need to sort through the box.
🔸 Some meals are very simple: Great for ease, but if you like bold flavors, you may want to zhuzh things up with spices or toppings.

Final Verdict: Is Hungryroot Worth It?

If you want easy vegetarian meals without the mental load of “what’s for dinner,” Hungryroot is genuinely one of the best services I’ve tested.

I have your cookbook and absolutely love it. My favorite recipe from it has to be the coconut kidney bean curry! I am addicted to it! I also love all things chickpea so those recipes are made quite often by me as well. And the marry me butter beans! They were so good I was rendered speechless! Thank you for the wonderful recipes!
