What Is a Quart?
A quart is 32 fluid ounces. The word quart comes from the Latin word Quartus meaning a fourth and the later old French word Quarte also meaning a ¼ portion. In liquid measurements this means ¼ of a gallon. The term gallon also comes from Rome originating from the word Galleta or Galletum meaning wine jug. Clearly, the Romans liked their wine in large containers.
In Rome everything was measured in 1/2s, 1/4s. 1/8s etc. This seems awkward today as the decimal based metric system makes so much sense, but in Roman times 1/4 of a gallon, i.e. a quart, was easy to measure. A quart was obtained by dividing the contents a gallon in jug half then half again. Conversely, dividing 1/10 of a jug of wine was hard to do accurately This logic is evident in all of non-metric measurements today. So, our imperial measuring system isn’t illogical. It is just Old School.
What Is a Liter?
A liter is 33.8 fluid ounces. The liter was introduced in France in 1795 by the Republican government after dethroning, the monarchy and all trappings associated with that government, and so began the metric system. In 1901 international agreement was reached to defined the liter as the volume occupied by 1 kg of pure water.
So, while most of the world has moved on to the metric system, The U.S. still uses our pints, quarts, and gallons.
So how many quarts are in a liter? The answer is 1.057. But if precise accuracy isn’t important, just treat them the same!
