Everything you need to know about measuring grams, from terms and origin to how many grams are in an ounce.

There are 28.346 grams in an ounce. This is the same regardless of what you’re measuring because both ounces and grams are methods of measuring weight.

Not so long ago, when we wanted to cook something new, we pulled out one of our cookbooks. They were almost universally written here in the USA, with ingredients listed in ounces, fluid ounces, tablespoons, etc. Today, however, some of the best recipes come from Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, and others. Many of these recipes come from around the world, and they are measured in metric units, so we have to adapt.

What Is An Ounce?

The term ounce comes from the Roman word โ€œuncia.โ€ It was 1/12th of a roman copper bar used as a tool to measure the length of an inch and the weight of an ounce. Modern ounce weight and volume measurements, however, come from Britain. A fluid ounce is 1/16th the volume of a pint. A dry ounce weighs 1/16 of a pound, or 28.346 grams. What is a troy ounce?

The “troy ounce” originated in the Middle Ages and is still used today to measure precious metals. A troy ounce is heavier than a standard ounce. 1 troy ounce is equal to 1.097 standard ounces (and there are 31.103 grams in 1 troy ounce.)

What Is A Gram?

The gram was introduced in France following the French Revolution of 1789. They decreed the metric system and defined the gram as the weight of one cubic centimeter of water. The French went all in on the metric system then, and in time the world followed. The only nations still using ounces are the United States, Liberia, and Myanmar.

Quick Conversions

These conversions are important because, as we said, recipes developed outside the United States call for grams not ounces, and in baking precise ingredient quantities can be important.

To convert grams to ounces simply divide the grams called for by 28.35. Another option is to simply use your kitchen scale, all of which today have settings for both grams and ounces. To convert ounces to grams you simply multiply the grams by 28.35. The two tables below provide some commonly found recipe quantities converted to ounces! (related: grams to pounds)

Hi, I am currently studying the history of organic chemistry and how many ways it has changed our every day lives for the better. I have found a few sources stating that one ounce is exactly 28.349.52.
