How many mL in a gallon?

There are 3,785 milliliters in a gallon. There are 1,892 milliliters in a half gallon.

On the surface that may not appear a commonly useful conversion, but if you are brewing kombucha or beer and want to try some of the vast number of international recipes, you need to be able to move between imperial and metric units! Conversions between some of the most common recipe amounts are provided below.

For today we will skip the Imperial gallon used in Canada (the Imperial gallon is simply 20% larger than a US gallon).

What Is a Gallon?

The gallon is an Imperial measurement. The term gallon comes from the Roman word “galleta” or “galletum” meaning wine jug. There is some evidence that the origin may predate Latin and comes from the Celtic people. The word “gallon” may also have come from the Gaulish (Gaul covered most of modern day France) word “galla” meaning “vessel”. I guess everybody likes their wine in large containers!

A gallon is 128 fluid ounces, but why? Why not 100 ounces similar to the metric system? The Romans weren’t stupid. They did rule most of the world for 500 years. It was just easy to divide a gallon in half then half again to get a quart. Cut it in half a 3rd time for a pint, etc. This is how we came to the Imperial system. It was all based on 1/2s, 1/4s, 1/8s, 1/16ths. It was just easier to get accurate measurements in a time before accurate inexpensive scales.

What Is a Milliliter?

The liter is a metric measurement. The liter was introduced in France in 1795 by the revolutionary government after overthrowing the monarchy and everything associated with it, and so the world in time got the metric system. In 1901 an international agreement defined the liter as the space occupied by 1 kg of pure water. A milliliter was then defined as 1/1,000th of a liter or the volume of one gram of pure water.

So again, how many milliliters are in a gallon? The answer is 3,875 or 3.875 liters.
