ingredients in this buttery garlic bread
You just need a handful of ingredients to make your own vegan garlic bread at home!
- Sourdough Bread: First up, you will need 1 loaf of sourdough bread. And while I personally love sourdough with this recipe, you can use any type of bread your prefer (like white, whole wheat, or ciabatta!)
- Butter: Next, you’ll need ½ cup of vegan butter/margarine.
- Garlic: For the garlic portion, use 6 cloves of minced garlic. Feeling fancy? Use our Garlic Confit or even Air Fryer Roasted Garlic (you can use the oil it cooked in to replace the butter!)
- Seasonings: Next, add flavor with ½ teaspoon each of onion powder, dried basil, and dried parsley. Follow that with ¼ teaspoon each of oregano and salt.
How to make vegan garlic bread
The secret to this garlic bread happens in steps 2 and 4. First, we’ll slice the loaf without cutting all the way through. When we get to step 4, we’ll pour the butter mixture inside, which creates a hasselback potato-style garlic bread. Each bite is coated with delicious flavor!
- Heat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C).
- Slice the bread: Cut bread into slices, making sure not to cut all the way through the loaf to keep the slices intact at the bottom. Place the loaf on a large piece of aluminum foil.
- Stir the butter and flavorings: Melt the vegan butter in the microwave (in 10 second bursts to prevent any butter explosions). Stir in all of the remaining ingredients.
- Garnish the bread: Spoon the butter mixture into each of the cracks. Wrap the loaf in foil.
- Bake: Bake for 15 minutes, then unwrap the foil and bake for another 5 minutes.
How to Get crispier bread
Craving extra crispy garlic bread? For bread that has the most perfect crunch around the edges, bake as described above. Then, slice the pieces completely through and lay the slices in a single flat layer, broiling until golden brown! Bon appétit!
Vegan Butter Options & Substitutes
When it comes to making vegan garlic bread, choosing the right butter substitute is crucial for achieving that perfect balance of rich, creamy, and savory flavors. Here are some popular vegan butter options to consider:
- Plant-Based Margarine: This is one of the most common and widely available options. Look for margarines labeled as “vegan” or “plant-based” in your local grocery store. They are typically made from a combination of vegetable oils like soybean, palm, or olive oil. Some popular brands include Earth Balance, Miyoko’s, and Country Crock Plant Butter.
- Coconut Oil: Extra virgin coconut oil is a versatile and flavorful alternative to butter. It has a slightly sweet and nutty taste that can complement the garlic flavor in the bread. Keep in mind that coconut oil can solidify at cooler temperatures, so you may need to melt it before mixing with the garlic and herbs.
- Olive Oil: Extra virgin olive oil is a classic choice for adding depth of flavor to garlic bread. It brings a distinct, fruity taste that complements the garlic. You can mix it with minced garlic and herbs to create a paste that can be spread onto the bread.
