Everything you need to know about measuring and converting metric milliliters to pints. We’ll look at the history of metric volume measurements, the ancient history of the pint, and how many milliliters are in a pint (and other helpful measurements!)

How many mL in a pint?
There are 473 milliliters in a pint.
The United States is one of only three nations that still use the pint. The other two are Myanmar and Liberia. The rest of the world long ago went to the decimal based metric system, so if you use any international recipe it is apt to be measured in grams and milliliters.
Being able to easily convert between metric and our imperial measurement systems is important to cooking. So let’s break down a common conversion – how many mL in a pint?
Milliliters to Pints & Fluid Ounces
Starting in the metric system and need to know Imperial measurements (like pints or ounces)? Use this chart!
Metric | Fluid Ounces | Pints |
50 ml | 1.69 | 0.106 |
100 ml | 3.38 | 0.21 |
200 ml | 6.76 | 0.42 |
333 ml | 11.3 | 0.70 |
500 ml | 16.9 | 1.06 |
1 liter | 33.8 | 2.11 |
1.5 liters | 50.7 | 3.17 |
2 liters | 67.6 | 4.23 |
5 liters | 169 | 10.57 |
10 liters | 338 | 21.14 |
Pints to Milliliters & Liters
Starting in the Imperial system and need to move to metric measurements (like liters and milliliters). This chart is for you!
Imperial | Milliliters | Liters |
1/8 pint (1/4 cup) | 59 | 0.06 |
1/4 pint (1/2 cup) | 118 | 0.12 |
1/2 pint (1 cup) | 237 | 0.24 |
1 pint | 473 | 0.47 |
2 pints (1 quart) | 946 | 0.95 |
4 pints (1/2 gallon) | 1892 | 1.89 |
8 pints (1 gallon) | 3785 | 3.78 |
What Is a Pint?
The pint is an Imperial measurement. The word Pint comes from the Latin term “pincta” derived from painted marks on the side of a container to show its capacity. While tens are our normal units of division today, ancient times used eights. In Rome, a pint was 1/8 of a gallon. This seems inefficient today compared to the decimal based metric system, but in ancient Rome 1/2s, 1/4s, and 1/8s were the standard. To get a pint a gallon jug was simply split evenly in half, half again, and half a 3rd time to produce 8 equal pints.
In the United States, a pint is defined as 16 fluid ounces, but our friends in the United Kingdom and Ireland can’t let it be that simple. While they use the metric system, they still pour their beers in pints, but their pint is 20 fluid oz. So if you’re visiting one of these countries, remember that a pint is not the same as it is in the States! The Brits like their beers big.
What Is a Milliliter?
The liter is a metric measurement. The liter was introduced in France in 1795 by the revolutionary government after overthrowing the monarchy and everything associated with it, and so the world in time got the metric system. Just cutting off the heads of the king and queen wasn’t enough. The people of France decided to throw out the ancient imperial measurement system as well.
The metric system, however, didn’t come into existence overnight, and it took a while for nations to agree upon the relevant lengths, weights, and volumes that became today’s metric system. In 1901 an international agreement defined the liter as the volume of 1 kg of pure water. A milliliter was then defined as 1/1,000th of a liter or the volume of one gram of pure water.
So again, how many milliliters are in a pint? The answer is 473 or 0.473 liters.
