When it comes to grocery delivery and meal kits, Iโ€™ve tested a lot of options in my kitchen. Some have been overly complicated, lacking in flavor, or just plain underwhelming.

So when Hungryroot asked me to try their service, I was intrigued…but also skeptical. Could it really save time without sacrificing quality? Could it actually make my weeknight cooking easier?

After testing their service (and cooking my way through a bunch of their recipe), I can confidently say: this is one of the most flexible and time-saving meal solutions Iโ€™ve tried!

What Is Hungryroot?

Unlike traditional meal kits, Hungryroot blends grocery delivery with easy-to-follow recipes. Instead of shipping a perfectly portioned bag of pre-measured spices and half a tomato, Hungryroot sends you real grocery staples that can be used across multiple meals (along with curated meal ideas to make the most of your box).

The Meal I Tested: Beyond Brussels + Sesame Ginger Stir-Fry

I tested multiple meals across four Hungryroot boxes, and the Beyond Brussels + Sesame Ginger Stir-Fry was my favorite! This 15-minute meal combines plant-based Beyond Meat, crispy Brussels sprouts, fluffy rice, and a flavorful sesame ginger sauce.

I followed Hungryrootโ€™s instructions exactly as written to see how seamless (and delicious) the process was. If you want to replicate this at home, itโ€™s totally doable with just a few basic ingredients, so Iโ€™m sharing the step-by-step instructions below!

Ingredients needed for Beyond meat and Brussels sprout stir fry.
I had to triple-check that I wasn’t missing something because it seemed too easy, but this was all I needed to make dinner!

Hereโ€™s How It Went:

  1. Cook the Beyond Burgers: I heated a lightly oiled skillet over medium-high, broke up the Beyond Meat patties, and seasoned with salt and pepper. In about 4 minutes, the crumbles were browned and caramelized.
  2. Sautรฉ the Brussels Sprouts: Next, I cooked the Brussels with a little oil, salt, and pepper. The instructions emphasized stirring minimally for better browningโ€”and they were right. After 5-6 minutes, they were golden and tender.
  3. Warm the Rice: A quick 2-minute stir in the pan with a splash of water, and the rice was warm and fluffy.
  4. Bring It All Together: I added the Beyond crumbles and Brussels sprouts back to the skillet, stirred in the sesame ginger sauce, and let everything warm through.

My Verdict?

  • Cook time: While the recipe is designed to be a quick 15-minute meal, it took me a little longer to get a good char on the Brussels sproutsโ€”likely because I doubled the recipe and crowded the pan. That said, the process was still straightforward and low-effort, and with a little extra patience, the Brussels turned out perfectly golden and crisp.
  • Flavor: The sesame ginger sauce added a perfect balance of sweet, savory, and tangy, while the Brussels sprouts brought a nice crispiness.
  • Portion size: Generous for four servings, and I even had leftovers for the next day.

What I Loved About Hungryroot

1. Itโ€™s Incredibly Flexible

In my testing, one of the biggest perks of Hungryroot was its flexibility. Unlike traditional meal kits, where you have to cook exactly what they send you, Hungryroot lets you:
โœ” Swap ingredients to better match your preferences
โœ” Use the groceries for other meals instead of just one recipe
โœ” Pick your level of effortโ€”some meals require just heating, while others involve simple cooking.

2. The Groceries Are High Quality

I was impressed with the freshness of the ingredients in my Hungryroot box. Everything was packed in layers, ensuring that perishable items stayed cold while pantry staples remained dry and intact. By the time it reached my door, everything was at the right temperature and ready to cook!

3. It Saves So Much Time

Between grocery shopping, planning meals, and cooking, food takes up a lot of time each week. In my experience, Hungryroot cut down my time in the kitchen dramatically.

What Could Be Improved?

While my experience was overwhelmingly positive, there are a couple of things to keep in mind:

๐Ÿ”ธ Price: Hungryroot isnโ€™t the cheapest grocery option. The base plan starts at $70 per week, but depending on how many meals and groceries you order, it can easily climb over $100. If you usually eat out or order takeout, though, this can actually save you money.

๐Ÿ”ธ Packaging Organization: Everything arrived fresh, but ingredients werenโ€™t always grouped by meal, which meant a little more time sorting through the box. Not a dealbreaker, but something to be aware of.

๐Ÿ”ธ Flavor Customization: While the meals are great as-is, theyโ€™re also simple enough to tweak. If you like bolder flavors, you might want to add your own spices, extra sauce, or toppings.

Final Thoughts: Is Hungryroot Worth It?

Yesโ€”if you want a meal service that actually makes your life easier.

โœ” If you love grocery delivery but also want easy meals, Hungryroot is the perfect middle ground.
โœ” If youโ€™re short on time but want to cook more at home, the 15-minute meal options are a lifesaver.
โœ” If you hate wasting food, youโ€™ll love that the ingredients can be used flexibly across multiple meals.

Would I order Hungryroot again? Absolutely. In fact, Iโ€™m already planning my next box. ๐Ÿ˜
