I don’t know about your pup, but my Rhubarb LOVES to chew! So it’s important that I always have dog chews at the ready to keep her entertained and engaged (and prevent her from chewing things like shoes and socks).

This simple and wholesome recipe, requiring just two ingredients, is a delightful treat that will keep your dog entertained while satisfying their natural instinct to chew.

With the combination of carrots and flavorful broth, these frozen chews are not only delicious but also packed with nutrients. Let’s cook!

Homemade Dog Chew Ingredients

  • Carrots: Carrots serve as the main ingredient in this recipe, offering a crunchy texture that dogs love. Rich in vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants, carrots are healthy for dogs, contributing to good digestion, dental health, and immune support.
  • Bone Broth: Flavorful bone broth not only enhances the flavor of the carrots but also provides additional nutrients beneficial for dogs. Bone broth is rich in collagen, glucosamine, and chondroitin, promoting joint health and reducing inflammation. (You can use veggie broth if you’re a vegetarian household, just be sure it’s free from onion and garlic, which are toxic to dogs!)

How to make frozen carrot dog chews

Step 1: Boil
To prepare the chews, place the whole carrots in a large, wide pot. Pour in the bone or beef broth and add enough water to fully cover the carrots. Bringing it to a boil, then covering the pot and letting it cook for approximately 20 to 30 minutes, allows the carrots to become tender while absorbing the flavorful broth.

This cooking process also infuses the carrots with beneficial nutrients from the broth, creating a nutritious chew that your dog won’t be able to resist.

Step 2: Freeze
After boiling, it’s time to transform the soft carrots into delightful frozen chews. Arrange the cooked carrots on a parchment-lined plate, ensuring they are placed in a single layer.

By freezing them until solid, which typically takes about 2 hours, the carrots will develop the perfect firm texture, ideal for those super chewers

Step 3: Serve
These homemade dog chews are best served to your furry friend while supervised as an occasional treat. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the freezer, ensuring you have a healthy homemade treat readily available whenever your pup deserves a little extra pampering.

A Guide To Buying The Right Broth

When choosing bone broth for your dog, it’s essential to be mindful of the ingredients to ensure it’s safe and beneficial. Here are some key points to look out for:

  • No Onions or Garlic: Ensure the bone broth does not contain onions or garlic, as these ingredients are toxic to dogs and can cause digestive upset or more severe complications.
  • Avoid Added Salt: Avoid bone broths with high sodium content or added salt. Excessive salt can be harmful to dogs, leading to dehydration and other health issues.
  • Avoid Added Seasonings: Opt for plain bone broth without added spices or seasonings, as some herbs and spices commonly used in human broths may not be safe for dogs.

Hi Sarah! I made the dog chews last night. Have not give her one yet. I previously made some with unsalted Swanson chicken broth. She liked them OK, but I want her to have the very best flavor and safe ingredients. I recently bought a bone broth called Zoup with no artificial ingredients, GMO Free, and Gluten Free, but it has Yeast Extract and Sea Salt. It has 480 mg of sodium per serving(8 Oz).I think that’s a lot of Sodium but I pour out the broth and just give her the carrots. I guess I’m asking what brand Broth do you use?

    1. Sarah Bond says:

Hi Douglas! I used a broth made specifically for dogs that I found at the pet food store, it’s lower sodium!

Will it hurt my dog teeth? How many frozen carrots i can feed?

  2. Peggy Larman says:

If onion in broth is minimal, can you make it safer by diluting w/a little more water?

    1. Sarah Bond says:

I would think that should be fine!

  3. Judith Greenlee says:

Can you do this in an Instant Pot and if so how long should they be cooked?

    1. Sarah Bond says:

Yes, you can totally make them in the Instant Pot! Just cook the carrots on High Pressure for about 2 to 3 minutes, then quick release. You want them tender but still firm enough to hold their shape like a hot dog—just keep an eye on size and adjust time if they’re thicker.

      About 3 months!

  5. Bailey says:

    Do you peel the carrots?

    1. Sarah Bond says:

      You don’t have to! 🙂
