Birthday cakes aren’t just for humans! This easy, adorable dog birthday cake is the paw-fect way to celebrate your four-legged bestie’s big day. Made with simple, dog-friendly ingredients, it’s guaranteed to get tails wagging (and earn you some extra puppy kisses!).

The Best Dog Birthday Cake
We all know our dogs are basically our children. They shower us with love and deserve only the best (and by best, I mean their own camping tent, a dedicated blanket, the fanciest dog food, and, of course, dog birthday cakes).
Okay, maybe that’s a little extra (or is it? Rhubarb has all of the above). But even if your dog doesn’t need a tent, they would absolutely love a dog-friendly cake. The best part? This cake is ridiculously easy to whip up, so there’s no excuse not to treat your furry pal.
Made with simple, pup-approved ingredients, it’s the perfect way to celebrate their special day. And as an ecstatic (and exhausted and obsessed) #dogmom to one very energetic puppy, it’s time to make some cake!

Here’s What You’ll Need
Dog cakes can be found at bakeries around the country, but they are easier than you think to make at home! Jump down to the recipe card for exact measurements—this is just an overview!
- Dry Framework: We’ll use all-purpose flour here, which is fine for dogs in small amounts. (You can use whole wheat flour for added fiber.) We’ll also need some baking soda to help the cake rise and become fluffy.
- Apple Sauce: This adds the natural sweet flavor and moisture that dogs enjoy (whereas traditional cake uses oil to accomplish this). Just remember to use no-sugar-added applesauce.
- Shredded Carrots: You can use pre-shredded carrots or shred carrots using a grater. Just like with humans, carrots have all the best nutrients for your four-legged friend’s eyesight!
- Peanut Butter: What dog doesn’t love peanut butter?! Peanut butter acts as our fat in this cake (for better baking) and has a strong smell that makes it irresistible to dogs (just don’t use one with xylitol!).
- Eggs: Eggs are critical to helping cakes rise and add protein for a more nutrient-dense cake.
- Frosting: We will boil and mash some potatoes (Russet or Yukon Golds are best), then mix them with yogurt for a delicious, whipped frosting! Low-fat or fat-free yogurt can be used, but double-check that it doesn’t contain xylitol (an artificial sweetener toxic to dogs).

Frosting Ideas
Potatoes whip and spread like frosting but are perfectly safe for dogs to eat. Some other dog-friendly options include plain unsweetened yogurt (or yogurt mixed with peanut butter) and mashed sweet potatoes. You can also try blended cottage cheese for a protein-packed option or pumpkin puree for a smooth, slightly sweet layer! Play around with different frostings to see which one your pup loves most.

Making This Is A Piece Of Cake
This cake is so easy that your dog may get birthday cake twice a year! (Jump to the recipe card for the full printable instructions.)
Step 1: Prep The Pan
Preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C). Grease and lightly flour a round 8-inch cake pan (or smaller tiered pans).
Step 2: Make The Cake Batter
In a large bowl, stir the flour and baking soda. Then, add your applesauce, shredded carrots, peanut butter, and eggs. Stir to combine.

Step 3: Bake The Cake
Pour cake batter into cake pan(s). Bake for 30 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool, then remove it from the pan.

Step 4: Cook Potatoes For Frosting
Once the cake is out of the oven and cooling, it’s time to make your frosting! Cook the potatoes until very soft, either by microwaving or boiling.

Step 5: Whip The Potatoes
Mash the potatoes until smooth, then use an electric beater to whip them together with the yogurt.
Step 6: Decorate Your Cake
Spread some of the icing onto the cake, optionally using a piping bag to add icing decoration around the cake.

Recipe Tips
Ingredients To Avoid: This dog birthday cake is flexible as far as ingredients and frosting—just avoid anything toxic like chocolate, xylitol, or large amounts of salt or sugar.
Try Oat Or Whole Wheat: These flours are gentler on your pup’s tummy than regular white flour and add a nice boost of fiber. If you have some in your pantry, try one of these options!
Adjust For Preferences: If your dog isn’t a fan of one ingredient, swap it for something they love (like mashed banana instead of applesauce).
Serve in Small Slices: Even though it’s made with dog-safe ingredients, serve your furry friend a small slice to avoid overindulgence.

Dog Birthday Cake with Mashed Potato Frosting
Ingredients
Dog Cake
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 cup applesauce
- 1 cup shredded carrots
- ½ cup peanut butter, DO NOT use peanut butter that contains xylitol
- 2 eggs
Dog-Friendly Frosting
- 2 lbs potatoes peeled and chopped
- 1 cup plain low fat yogurt, DO NOT use yogurt that contains xylitol
Instructions
- Prep: Preheat oven to 350°F (176°C). Grease and lightly flour a round 8-inch cake pan (or smaller tiered pans).
- Cake Batter: In a large bowl, stir together flour and baking soda, then add applesauce, carrots, peanut butter, and eggs. Stir to combine.
- Bake: Pour cake batter into cake pan(s). Bake for 30 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Allow cake to cool fully before removing from pan.
- Cook Potatoes for Frosting: Once the cake is out of the oven and cooling, begin making frosting (frosting needs to be hot when it's piped on the cake because it hardens once cooled). Cook potatoes until very soft, either by microwaving or boiling until fork-tender.
- Whip: Mash the potatoes until smooth, then use an electric beater to whip them together with the yogurt.
- Decorate: Spread some of the icing onto the cake, optionally using a piping bag to add icing decoration around the cake. Decorate with your dog's favorite treats or even fresh fruits!

We made this for a party with dogs. They loved it. Little confession, I ate a piece too. A bit bland for cake, but quite edible for people too. Two thumbs up.
So happy to hear it! Bone Appetreat! 😀
