Red apples on a red scale.

Recipes for apple pies, apple crisps, stuffed apples, or apple anything often call for a certain number, pounds, or cups of apples. But how many apples does that mean you need from your local market, orchard, or grocery? When it comes to figuring out how many apples you need for your next apple recipe, we’ve got you covered.

Apple Trivia!

How many types of apples are there in the United States? (The answer is at the bottom of this post!)

How Much Does One Apple Weigh?

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the average weight of an apple is 6 ounces, or 167 grams.

  • Large apples are roughly 3 ¼” in diameter and weigh 7.3 ounces
  • Small apples are 2 ¾” in diameter and weigh 5 ounces
  • One cup of sliced apples weighs about 3.84 ounces

How Many Apples Are In A Pound?

Given that the average apple weighs 0.33 pounds, there are about 3 apples in a pound.

  • There are 2.2 large apples in a pound
  • There are 2.7 medium apples in a pound.
  • There are 3.2 small apples in a pound

How Many Apples In 3 Pounds?

Bagged apples tend to be medium to small sized. There are generally 8 medium apples or 9-10 small apples in a 3 pound bag.

How Many Apples Are In A Cup?

According to the USDA, there are 109 grams or just under 4 ounces (3.84 ounces) of sliced apples in a cup. This means a pound of apples yields roughly 4 cups, and a 3 pound bag almost 12 cups (12.5 cups by the USDA’s standard). A single medium apple fills 1.5 cups.

How Many Apples Are In A Peck?

If you want to buy apples from an orchard the peck (¼ of a bushel or 2 gallons) is definitely an option. You ought to know how many apples you are getting, and be able to compare that price to just getting 3 pound bags from the grocery. And, you need to know if you should even consider buying that many apples. The peck is a unit of volume not weight, but an apple’s weight corresponds to its size. So, the USDA states that a peck of apples weighs about 10 pounds and generally contains about 28 medium or 22 large apples.

How Many Apples Are In a Bushel?

A bushel is 4 pecks meaning you get roughly 40 pounds of apples or roughly 112 medium or 88 large apples in a bushel. That is a lot of apples, but for someone making apple schnapps or cider this may be an option.
