Fruit Trivia

Can you guess which of these Q fruits is one of the earliest known fruits and even called ‘the golden apple’ in Greek mythology? Scroll to the bottom of this post for the answer!

Quince

Two quinces on an isolated white background.

Quince are a genuinely unique fruit in that they are the only member of the genus Cydonia. Most fruit are of a large family of fruits, but not this ancient treat. There are biblical references to the fruit in Judea, and it has grown in many areas of the world since. It is known as a drought resistant shrub that thrives in both shade and sun, and doesn’t require a whole lot of maintenance. Its fruit are a bright yellow looking rather like a pear and are fairly tart, so they are rarely eaten raw but rather made into jams or alcoholic drinks.

Quandong

Quandong is also known as native peach, and is a native of Australia. Known as a “bush food” they are used as an exotic flavoring in both sweet and savory foods. Aboriginal people have long used the fruit in jams and chutney, and the fruit’s single seed is locally crushed into a paste used on sore gums.

Quararibea

Many quararibeas.

Quararibea are native to Central America and the northern half of South America. The yellow to orange fruit is said to taste like a sweet pumpkin with perhaps a hint of mango, and is normally eaten raw but also juiced.

Quenepa

Quenepa fruit on an isolated white background.

Quenepa is also known as the Spanish Lime. It grows throughout Central and South America as well as India and Florida. They have a bittersweet flavor and appear to have mild laxative effects. They are about the size of a small lime with a thin green peel, thus the name Spanish lime. They are often used regionally in soft drinks and alcoholic beverages. If you are looking for information on more traditional limes and their health benefits check out our post all about limes.

Querina Apples

Many querina apples.

Querina Apples are also known as Florina developed in France in the 1970s. They are a cross between Jonathan and Red delicious apples. Like other apples these are very healthy and great in a variety of Apple Recipes.

Quinault Strawberry

Quinault Strawberry were developed by researchers at Washington State University looking to develop a variety that could produce two harvests per year (late spring and early summer). Each plant can produce up to 200 berries a year. These are as nutritious as other strawberries and great in a wide variety of strawberry recipes.

Queen Anne Cherries

Many queen anne cherries.

Queen Anne Cherries are mostly grown in Michigan and the Pacific Northwest. They are also called the Royal Ann and Napoleon Cherry. They have a light pink skin are slightly more tart than most cherries and would be great in Cherry Cheesecake Oat Cookies (Vegan, GF). Cherries are super healthy. Check them out in 9 Unexpected Cherry Benefits (and why you should be eating more!)

Queen Apples

Queen Apples are native to New Zealand. These dark- red apples are said to be crisp and juicy as are, honestly, most apple varieties. There may be as many as 30,000 apple varieties worldwide today, and 2,500 of these are grown in the United States. Apples have been grown and eaten since the Roman Era and quite possibly before that. If you want more information on just a few of the most popular American apples check out our Apples 101 Nutritional and Variety Guide.

Queen Forelle Pears

Queen’s Forelle Pears are a classically bell-shaped pear on the small size. They are described as sweet and tangy. This variety would be a good choice for this Dutch Poached Pear Recipe. For a whole lot more on pear types, nutrition, and uses see Pear Types 101: Everything You Need To Know.

Queen Tahiti Pineapples

A queen tahiti pineapple insoil.

Queen Tahiti Pineapples have a bright yellow fresh known to be particularly juicy. This is a very old variety of pineapple suitable for any pineapple recipe. One of our favorites is Grilled Pineapple Salsa (less than 30 minutes, no cilantro!). Pineapples have a healthy nutrition profile. Pineapple 101: Nutrition Info and a Whole Lot More.
