1. Jicama
2. Pumpkin
3. Jackfruit
4. Watermelon

Jackfruit
Jackfruit have a texture similar to mango or pineapple in that they are fairly fibrous. They are sweet, but some say that the flavor is similar to pulled pork when cooked. For this reason jackfruit are sometimes used in vegetarian meat substitute recipes (see jackfruit pulled pork and jackfruit carnitas!). The jackfruit is arguably much more nutritious than pork as it is a good source of fiber, potassium, flavonoids, and vitamin C.

Jamun Plum
Jamun Plum are also known as Malabar, Java, or Black plums. Native to India these plums are sweet and has a strong nutrition profile as do other plum varieties. While you can get Jamun Plums in the United States, other plum varieties work great in this Plum Cobbler Smoothie.

Japanese Persimmon
Japanese Persimmon while native to Japan are grown throughout Asia, India, and Australia, and are today also grown in California. Persimmons are usually eaten without preparation other than chilling, but they are also added to fruit and vegetable salads, ice cream, yogurt, and all manner of desserts and jams.

Japanese Plum
Japanese Plum is also known as the Chinese plum or Loquat. The trees are native to China, but now grown in Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Israel, Australia and the USA. Uses for the plums vary greatly nationally, but include in candies and liqueurs.

Jatoba Fruit
Jatoba Fruit is also known as the Stinking Toe Fruit. We aren’t making this up, and it also called the Locust fruit. The fruit is wrapped in a large brown pod whose shape does rather loosely resemble a toe. The fruit is 3 to 5 inches long and sweet, but the strong smell gives it the name. The native range of Jatoba is from Southern Mexico south to Peru and Brazil.

Java Apple
Java Apple or Rose apple is native to Southeast Asia. They are a staple in Vietnam where, like most apples, they are often eaten out of hand. The Java type of apple has a distinctive bell shape with colors ranging from pink to bright red.

Jazz Apples
Jazz Apples are a cross between Gala and Braeburn apples. They were developed in New Zealand. They are just one of what may be as many as 30,000 apple varieties worldwide today, and 2,500 of these are grown in the United States. Apples have been grown and eaten since the Roman Era and quite possibly before that.

Jelly Palm Fruit
Jelly Palm Fruit is also called the Pindo palm and is native to Brazil and Uruguay though they are today prevalent throughout South America and many southern states in America. It is often grown in the USA for its ornamental value though people often complain about the mess the abundance of fruit makes in their yard as the ripe fruit drop to the ground. They taste like a combination of pineapple and apricot and are often used in jams and wine

Johannisbeere
Johannisbeere is really just the German word for currant fruit which can come in red or black. Johannisbeere is used to make jellies and is added to other foods. They are not usually eaten raw.

Jostaberry
Jostaberry is a cross bred fruit from the blackcurrant, black gooseberry, and European gooseberry. The Jostaberry is smaller than a gooseberry but larger than the blackcurrant. Its taste is between the gooseberry and blackcurrant, but the gooseberry flavor is dominant. The fruit does not hold up to mechanical harvesting, so commercial production is uncommon and picking them is labor intensive making them expensive. Jostaberries are commonly eaten fresh, made into jams, chutneys, pies, and fruit wines.

Juicy Tomatoes
Juicy Tomatoes or Jitomate is the Mexican term for big bright red varieties of tomatoes. There is obviously too much to know about tomatoes and their 1,000s of uses to include here, but here is our guide on tomato varieties!

Jujube Fruit
Jujube Fruit is also known as the Red or Chinese Date and is native to Southern Asia. They have a sweet taste and are chewy making them good in candies and as a dried fruit. In parts of Asia they are used in traditional medicine as a sleep aide. They are a high fiber fruit with a reasonable nutrition profile.

Junglesop Fruit
Junglesop Fruit grow to typically 5 kg (11 lbs.) but can be as large as 15 kg. This native to Central Africa is a species of the custard apple family and is seen as an alternative food in times of famine due to its high nutritional value and large fruits. The fruit can be either sweet or sour depending on both the maturity of the fruit and the genetics of the specific tree.

Juniper Berries
Juniper Berries are grown in Asia, Europe and the Western United States. They’re best known use is in the making of Gin. Due to their strong flavor, they aren’t eaten on their own but are used as a flavoring in teas, meat recipes, and sauerkraut. Making gin seems like all the claim to fame they need.
